What you need to know
How do I know whether a week is even or odd?
Look at the week number within the year, as defined by the ISO 8601 standard. If that number is divisible by two the week is even, otherwise it is odd. The week always starts on a Monday and ends on a Sunday.
What is the first day of an even week?
Monday. Shared custody based on even weeks therefore starts on Monday morning and runs until Sunday evening, unless the court order sets another handover day.
How many weeks does 2026 have?
The year 2026 has 53 weeks. A year has 53 whenever 1 January falls on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year.
What happens in a year with 53 weeks?
Week 53 is odd, and so is week 1 of the following year: two odd weeks run back to back. The parent who takes the odd weeks then has the children for two weeks in a row. Best agreed on in advance.
Does 31 December always belong to the last week of the year?
No. A week belongs to the year of its Thursday, so depending on the year 31 December ends up in week 1 of the following year. It is the most common source of error in custody schedules.
Do school holidays change the parity of the weeks?
No, week numbering carries on during the holidays. Many court orders do however set a different split for school breaks, so the dates for zones A, B and C still need checking.
